The best time to visit the Riviera — month by honest month.
The Riviera has no bad months, only different bargains. From a working boat’s point of view — water temperature, sea state, crowds, light — here is the year as we actually live it, and when we would tell a friend to book.
September, the connoisseur’s month
May & June: the connoisseur’s opening
May is the coast waking up glamorous — Grand Prix, Film Festival, gardens at their peak — with sea still bracing (17–19°C) and event-week prices to match the spectacle. June is our honest favourite: water past 21°C, days at their longest, anchorages half-empty, every restaurant bookable. If you can choose freely, choose June.
July & August: the full theatre
Peak everything: 26°C water, guaranteed sun, fireworks over the bays — and the crowds the postcards edit out. The season works beautifully by boat precisely because the water absorbs what the roads cannot; our July days simply start earlier for the empty-morning anchorages. Book boats, rooms and Club 55 weeks ahead, and treat August traffic ashore as a spectator sport.

September & October: the secret
September is June’s equal with warmer water — the Med peaks near 25°C after its summer of heating, the light goes amber, the crowds evaporate on the first of the month. Locals call it the true season and book their own holidays in it. October stays swimmable in kind years and golden regardless; the first autumn swells bring the surf-minded out at Nice.
November to April: the Riviera’s own months
Mimosa in February, carnival at Nice, snow on the Alps behind a 15°C seafront lunch — the winter coast is the one the Belle Époque actually came for. Charter days run whenever the weather windows open, and an empty December anchorage off Cap Ferrat is a luxury July cannot buy. Bring a jumper; keep the sunglasses.
The short answers
Comfortably from mid-June (22°C+) through October, peaking around 25–26°C in August–September. June swims are fresh; September swims are the year’s best-kept secret.
November–April for flights, hotels and restaurants — the charter itself is €3,200 the full day year-round, so the off-season buys you the same day with emptier anchorages. Shoulder months (June, September–October) buy summer weather at half its queue.
