A surprising share of our guests have never set foot on a private boat — and by the first anchorage you cannot tell them from the veterans. Chartering skippered is the easiest form of boating that exists: no licence, no knowledge, no jobs. Here is everything a first-timer actually needs to know, which is pleasingly little.

What you are responsible for: nothing nautical
The captain handles the boat, the weather, the law, the lines, the anchor, the fuel and the plan’s feasibility. Your responsibilities begin and end at swimwear, sunscreen and appetite. You do not need a licence, an ounce of experience, or sea legs — the boat has handrails and the crew has hands. If you can enjoy a terrace, you can enjoy a deck.
How the day actually flows
You will be met on the quay, walked through the boat in five unhurried minutes (where things are, how the ladder works, where bags live dry), and asked the only important question: what does a great day look like for you? Then the lines come off. The plan stays soft all day — swims lengthen, lunches move, the afternoon reroutes around what you are loving. Speak up constantly; redirecting the day is not rude, it is the product.

The three first-timer worries, retired
“Will I be seasick?” On this coast in charter weather, very unlikely — and the sheltered bays exist precisely for cautious stomachs. “What if the weather turns?” The captain decides, tells you honestly the evening before, and cancellation for sea state costs you nothing. “Will it feel awkward having crew?” Not at all — the crew calibrates to your party’s temperature, present when wanted, invisible when not. It is their actual craft.
The short answers
Not for a skippered charter — the professional captain carries every qualification the day needs. Licences only enter the picture for bareboat rentals, where you drive yourself.
