Èze village — the eagle’s nest, done right.
Èze is the Riviera’s most photographed medieval village for the simplest reason: it hangs four hundred metres directly above the sea, a spiral of golden stone around a cactus-garden summit. It is also, at noon in July, a one-lane crowd simulator. The difference between the two experiences is entirely scheduling — here is the schedule.
the lane up to the light
Beat the coaches or join them
The village is essentially one climbing lane with beautiful distractions, and the tour coaches own it from ten to five. Go at opening or in the golden last hours; evening is best of all, when the day-trippers have drained away and the lanes belong to the hotel guests and the cats. The Jardin Exotique at the summit — succulents among the castle ruins, and THE view — closes at dusk; time the garden for your final hour and watch the coast light up beneath you.
Worth knowing on the hill
The two Château hotels — Chèvre d’Or and Château Eza — serve the famous terraces; a drink reservation buys the view without the tasting-menu commitment. The Fragonard perfume factory at the village foot runs free tours and generous samples. And the Nietzsche path — the mule track the philosopher climbed while drafting Zarathustra — drops steeply to Èze-sur-Mer on the shore in about an hour: knees permitting, it is the best free experience in the commune.

The sea-level version
Èze’s other self is its shoreline: the beach settlement below, Anjuna’s sand-side lunch, and the cliff mile that our charters run — the view up at the village that the village itself can never have. The perfect Èze day uses both altitudes: village at dawn or dusk, water in between. We hold the water part.
The short answers
Bus or car up the Moyenne Corniche, taxi from Beaulieu or Nice in 15–20 minutes, or the Nietzsche path on foot from Èze-sur-Mer station — a steep, beautiful 60–90 minute climb. There is no lift from the beach, whatever the map’s optimism suggests.
The lanes, yes; the Jardin Exotique at the summit charges a few euros and is worth double. Parking is the hidden cost in season — another argument for the taxi.
