Private charter or shared tour? An honest comparison.
Both put you on the same beautiful water, and the price gap is real — so the choice deserves a straight answer rather than a sales page. Having crewed both kinds of day, here is when each one is genuinely the right call.
nobody else’s anchorage
Take the shared tour when…
You are one or two people, the budget is the budget, and the goal is simply to see the coast from the water once — a €40–80 catamaran seat out of Nice delivers exactly that, with commentary and a swim stop. Solo travellers sometimes prefer the sociability. And for an hour’s harbour sightsee with children too young to remember it, a ticket beats a charter on every metric but comfort.
Charter privately when…
The day is the point. Groups of four or more close the price gap fast — ten guests at our full-day rate is €320 a head against €80 tour seats, and the €240 difference buys: your route, not a circuit; anchorages tours cannot enter; swimming when the water looks right rather than when the schedule says; a beach-club pontoon lunch under your own name; music you chose at a volume you chose; and no strangers in your photographs. Celebrations, proposals, families with rhythms of their own, and anyone allergic to queues — the private day is built of exactly what the shared day cannot sell.

The test question
Ask what you will remember. A shared tour is a lovely viewing of the coast; a private day is the coast happening to you — the cove with nobody in it, the lunch that ran long because it could, the fast run home nobody wanted to end. If the answer to “what is this day for?” is a memory rather than a view, you already know the answer.
The short answers
From four aboard the arithmetic starts working; from six it is barely a question — per-head cost approaches a nice dinner while the day becomes entirely yours. Under four, choose by occasion: ordinary sightseeing shares well, celebrations never do.
Rarely — tours run big stable catamarans and trip boats built for headcount; private charters run boats built for the day itself. Ours is a 14-metre, fifty-knot SACS with cabins and a swim platform: a different species from a hundred-seat sightseer.
